Dane Murphy went against the thoughts of other Nottingham Forest staff members to appoint Steve Cooper in 2021, The Athletic has claimed.
The Reds were in need of a manager when Chris Hughton was sacked following an alarming run of form.
Forest sat bottom of the Championship with a single point when he was sacked and Murphy had to get his thinking cap on.
The American CEO had identified Cooper as his number one target from the off and made that abundantly clear at boardroom level.
Other staff members that formed part of the hierarchy, however, fancied appointing Chris Wilder instead.
Murphy stayed true to his guns though and in doing so he pulled off an absolute masterstroke.
Cooper waltzed into the City Ground and transformed the club’s fortunes; leading them to promotion in just a matter of months.
Forest played some unbelievable football and Cooper captured the hearts of the supporters with his passionate approach.
Wilder would have been a different approach and one that would perhaps have been similar to Hughton.
The 55-year-old is a manager and Murphy was keen for the club to go along the route of appointing a head coach.
Murphy’s call looks like an inspired one.
Wilder showed very little during his time at Middlesbrough and was recently sacked with Boro in the Championship relegation zone.
Murphy went against Forest staff to appoint Cooper
The Championship CEO of the Year pulled off the sublime when he tempted Cooper to head to Forest.
He’s been a brilliant figure for the club and Forest are very lucky to have the head coach overseeing the team.
Likewise, Murphy deserves praise.
He was linked with an exit last week and that would be a sorry state of affairs with the CEO boasting bags of potential to do his job.
His decision to call upon Cooper should see him given the freedom of Nottingham.
The 42-year-old had been linked with roles at Crystal Palace and Burnley prior to him joining Forest and was viewed as a coup.
Now, he’s at the City Ground to stay and hopefully, the pair can continue a good working relationship on Trentside.
