Ex-Nottingham Forest striker Robert Earnshaw has told BBC Radio 5 Live that he was surprised to see Steve Cooper sign a new contract last week.
The Reds handed the 42-year-old a new three-year deal, with his current contract due to run out next summer.
Now, the club has some continuity in the dugout and the performance last night was vastly improved.
The Reds drew 1-1 with Aston Villa at the City Ground to edge away from the bottom of the Premier League.

Earnshaw watched on for BBC Radio 5 Live and he believes there is more to come and admits to being surprised at Cooper’s new deal.
He told BBC Sport: ” Monday’s game was much better but there is way more still to come.
“Steve Cooper is a good guy, he understands that there is a lot more to do that will make a difference.
“I was shocked that he got a new deal, but I thought it was a brilliant move.
“He deserves it, as well. I was at the club for three years, the fans are demanding but amazing.”
Forest are next in action when they go to Wolves on Saturday and they must build on last night’s result.
Cooper will now be able to relax given his ultimate vote of confidence from the club’s hierarchy.
Earnshaw surprised to see Cooper sign new contract
The former Reds talisman is a compatriot of Cooper’s and he was surprised to see the head coach sign a new deal.
He wasn’t the only one either.
After a week of speculation, Forest fans will have seen their hearts skip a beat when the breaking news ticker came up on Sky Sports early on Friday morning.
But, it was positive news and now the speculation is put to bed regarding the head coach.

Cooper will know that last night was a small step on the face of things.
Forest still need to improve and wins are badly needed if the Reds are to pull clear of the relegation zone.
Earnshaw is clearly on board with Forest’s decision to give Cooper a new contract.
He isn’t the only one. Now, everyone associated with the club will hope wins can follow in the coming weeks.
