Former Nottingham Forest star Lewis McGugan has slammed Dean Henderson, claiming that he’s been made to eat his words.

The on-loan Reds goalkeeper joined the City Ground from Manchester United in the summer.

He ended a year of hell at Old Trafford where he failed to make his mark on the first team having been denied a loan move.

Henderson told Sky Sports that he’d grown frustrated at United shortly after arriving on loan at Forest.

The Reds have conceded 22 goals already this season and McGugan thinks Henderson is eating his words a bit.

He told Nottinghamshire Live: “In terms of his distribution, it’s really poor for a goalkeeper of that standard, who has been where he’s been.

“The big thing for me was his interview when he left Manchester United, it put a big target on him and set the wrong tone.

“It has you fighting people already. As soon as you make a mistake or your form drops, people are ready to come at you because there is that target on your back.

“For a club like Manchester United, I think it was disrespectful and he didn’t need to say anything.”

The former Reds midfielder has perhaps missed the point here a little bit.

It’s fine to say that Henderson shouldn’t have said anything but ultimately he was just being honest.

He was asked why he’d not played much last season and clearly, he felt that he’d been offered some false promises.

His form has nothing to do with the comments he made and it’s been a struggle for a number of Forest players this season.

McGugan is perhaps right to question some of Henderson’s distribution this season.

Ultimately, it’s one area of his game where he could improve but it hardly makes him a bad goalkeeper all of a sudden.

Henderson is a coup for Forest and he will remain the team’s number-one goalkeeper during the 2022/23 campaign.
