Nottingham Forest sounded out former PSG and Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino before handing Steve Cooper a new contract.

According to The Athletic, Evangelos Marinakis made an ambitious move to appoint the man who has reached the Champions League Final.

Pochettino is an impressive coach and he looks set for another top job when he gets back into management.

Forest treated it as a nothing to lose situation having made a poor start to life in the Premier League.

The Reds have won just one of their opening 10 games and they currently sit bottom of the division on five points.

Pochettino was never going to be rocking up at the City Ground any time soon and even sounding him out sounds ridiculous.

After spending £150 million in the summer, however, the Reds won’t want to be dropping back into the Championship.

As a result, the club did consider making a chance but had a rethink following a fan backlash at some of the names mentioned.

Rafa Benitez, Nuno Espirito Santo and Bruno Lage were all linked with a move to the City Ground.

Cooper was thought to be on the brink, with his contract up at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

Now, however, he’s signed a new deal that will keep him on Trentside until 2025.

How ridiculous.

If Forest could establish themselves as a Premier League club then perhaps this wouldn’t be a pipedream.

Pochettino has enjoyed a 54% win ratio at Tottenham and a 65% win ratio at PSG during his career.

He plays a decent style of football and he’s also proven when it comes to giving younger players a chance.

It remains to be seen just how the Forest hierarchy will move from here.

The Reds go to Brighton on Tuesday, before playing Liverpool and Arsenal in quick succession.

Right now, it’s hard to see where the team’s next point comes from and it looks like a long season ahead.
