Steve Cooper has told The Athletic that there will be no blame attached to Nottingham Forest star Brennan Johnson.

The 21-year-old missed a penalty as the Reds lost 1-0 to Wolves at the weekend.

The Reds have now last seven of their last eight Premier League games and are rock-bottom of the league.

Forest have made an atrocious start to life back in the top flight and haven’t won a game since August.

Some changes will need to be made if they have any chance of staying up this season.

The challenge for Cooper is to quickly find a winning formula and he’s trying desperately to get a settled team.

It would appear that Johnson is in no danger of being taken out of the firing line, however, despite a drop in form.

Cooper told The Athletic: “Brennan will be disappointed but he has also scored some important penalties for us in the past.

“There is no blame. We will win together and lose together and that spirit will be important this season.”

Fans have been critical of the Forest talisman but they have a right to express concerns.

Johnson has not been his usual self in the Premier League and his work rate hasn’t been as energetic either.

The youngster is from the academy though and The Athletic has suggested that he’s a scapegoat.

That simply isn’t true though and he’s simply underperformed this season.

Johnson is only 21 though and he will be a big player for the Reds in the future.

Last season he scored 18 goals and 10 assists as Forest won promotion to the Premier League.

He hasn’t become a bad player overnight but he does have to get better quickly.

If Forest are handed another penalty this season, it will be interesting to see who gets the nod to take it.
