Matt Upson praised Brennan Johnson after he was substituted in the 89th minute of a 0-0 draw for Nottingham Forest at Brighton.
The Reds stood firm to claim their sixth point of 2022/23 and they climbed off the bottom of the Premier League.
Forest made three changes to their starting eleven and Johnson was tasked with playing through the middle as a striker.
The 21-year-old was keen to bounce back after missing a penalty in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat against Wolves at Molineux.
In fairness, it was an impressive display from Johnson and he did work harder than he has been doing of late.
Upson was impressed and when he went off in the 89th minute he summed up the youngster’s performance.
He said live on Amazon Prime: “He’s worked hard tonight, hasn’t he?
“There was the moment when he closed the goalkeeper down in the first half and he’s got into some good areas.
“Yes, he’s put in a real shift for his team tonight.”
Johnson has scored twice in the Premier League. It’s fair to say, however, that the youngster is still finding his feet at the level.
Still, that’s not a surprise and it looks like Steve Cooper will give him a platform to keep playing in the team.
Johnson scored 19 times last season and claimed 10 assists as the Reds won promotion from the Championship.
Upson praised Johnson after Forest draw
The man who made a single appearance for Forest during his career was impressed with the Reds in the second half.
Defensively they were resolute. Although it wasn’t pretty, this was a very decent point.
Brighton have been flying this season and they’ve beaten some very good teams during the current campaign.
Forest face Liverpool and Arsenal next and with that in mind, it was vital the Reds picked something up last night.
Johnson showed a lot of character at Brighton. Now, he needs to start believing in himself a little bit more.
If he does that, he will have every chance of looking much more like the player he was last season.
