Liverpool-supporting pundit Steve Nicol has claimed that he wasn’t surprised to see the Reds turned over by Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Taiwo Awoniyi scored 10 minutes into the second half to spark jubilant scenes around the City Ground.

The Reds held firm and secured a famous victory that will live long in the memory of Forest supporters.

It was only the second time this season that Forest have tasted a win and they must use it as a catalyst to kick on.

Nicol used to play for Liverpool and made a remarkable 468 appearances during his time at Anfield.

He won four league titles, three FA Cups and a European Cup during his time playing in the famous red jersey.

Nicol sits 19th on the list of all-time appearances makers and he still loves the club.

He wasn’t impressed at the weekend though and he’s implied that he wasn’t surprised to see Forest claim the win.

Nicol told ESPN: “The result on the face of it is a shock but if you sit down and look at Liverpool from the beginning of the season, is it such a huge shock?

“I mean away from home, they’ve got two draws out of five, and they’ve been inconsistent all season.

“It was six changes that started on Saturday. Gomez was starting. Let’s be honest, he’s had one incredible game but every game he’s making mistakes.”

Make no bones about it, Forest deserved to win the game.

The Reds were hardworking, dogged and stayed resolute defensively.

As for Liverpool, they did have chances but ultimately they played like a team that simply expected to turn up and win.

Forest worked their socks off and Steve Cooper will have been delighted with that aspect of his team’s performance.

It’s perhaps a surprising claim from Nicol, however.

Liverpool still had an abundance of quality on the pitch, not least at the back where Alisson, Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson all started.

It’s massively concerning for Liverpool right now, however.

They have injuries stocked up in the dressing room and their season is in real danger of falling apart now.
