Alan Shearer has hailed Nottingham Forest star Taiwo Awoniyi for his performance against Liverpool and he’s also named him in his Premier League Team of the Week.

The 25-year-old scored the game’s only goal as Forest stunned the team who reached the Champions League Final last season.

It was exactly what the Reds deserved too. Liverpool did miss chances but it was a superb performance from Forest.

Awoniyi has done pretty well since arriving at Forest and with three goals, he’s the top goalscorer in the team.

He’s not always been handed a place in the starting eleven by Steve Cooper, however.

The Nigeria international will now hope that his heroics last weekend will earn him a run of games.

Shearer was clearly impressed and he put Awoniyi in his Premier League Team of the Week.

He said: “It’s not every day you score the winner against Liverpool.”

Awoniyi signed for the Reds for £17.5 million from Union Berlin.

He was bang in form last season for the Bundesliga outfit and fired 18 goals for the club.

Now, he’s hoping to get up to speed at Forest and so far, particularly on home soil, he’s doing the business.

Awoniyi hailed by Shearer

It’s rare to see the former Premier League talisman name a Forest player in his Team of the Week.

In fairness, the Reds have been losing regularly so that’s hardly a surprise!

Awoniyi will be delighted with his goal against Liverpool, however, having spent several years on the books at Anfield.

The challenge for him now is to continue scoring and make it impossible for Cooper to leave him out of his starting eleven.

Awoniyi is awkward and uncompromising, whilst he also brings a different dimension to the Forest attack.

The 25-year-old must continue progressing and if he does that, he will soon have no problem in holding down a regular place.
