Nottingham Forest were beaten 5-0 by Arsenal but with Serge Aurier, the Reds did have one bright spark.
The Ivorian defender has come into the team and made an instant impact at the City Ground.
He was top-class against Liverpool last weekend and he was probably Forest’s best player at Arsenal.
Aurier was a surprise signing on a free transfer in the summer.
The right-back departed Villarreal at the end of his contract and had been available without a transfer fee.
Forest had already added Neco Williams to their ranks but some experienced backup was sought.
Aurier helped the La Liga team reach the semi-final of the Champions League last season.
He made 24 appearances for the club after joining from Tottenham where he played 110 times.
It would appear that his experience is going to be useful for Forest.
When all around him appear incapable of remaining calm and composed, Aurier is proving a reliable head who is accustomed to this level.
Since coming on as a substitute in a 4-0 thrashing against Leicester, the 29-year-old has been fantastic.
He will get better too as he works his way towards full fitness.
The World Cup will give Aurier a chance to take stock and a mini pre-season for the 82-cap player could be very useful.
Who Scored shows just how decent Aurier was during yesterday’s defeat.
He won eight tackles, the most of any Forest player and also made five clearances.
Aurier was useful in the air too and won three aerial challenges against opposition players.
Aurier provides bright spark for Forest
The player would have been forgiven for feeling the nerves somewhat ahead of this game.
As a former Spurs performer, he was always going to get a tough reception from the Arsenal crowd.
The Reds player did well though and certainly didn’t look fazed.
Indeed, it’s a shame that other players wearing navy blue on the pitch didn’t show the work rate which Aurier did.
Forest spent a fortune in the summer.
Yesterday, however, it was a player who cost nothing at all who provided Forest with their bright spark at Arsenal.
