Nottingham Forest head coach Steve Cooper has explained why he chose to start Jesse Lingard and Renan Lodi on Saturday.

The pair kept their places in the team after scoring their first goals for the club during the 2-0 win over Tottenham on Wednesday night.

Both players did well against Crystal Palace as the Reds won 1-0 to climb off the foot of the Premier League table.

Lingard should have perhaps netted his first league goal for the club but fired a late effort just wide of the post.

Lodi produced arguably his best display in a Forest shirt, stifling Eberechi Eze and Wilfried Zaha at various points.

Both players have been striving for some consistency and the past week has offered hope that both can be good signings.

Cooper appears to concur and has explained why he chose to keep them in his starting eleven against Palace.

He told Nottinghamshire Live: “In life when you do something well you want to do it again quickly.

“I just felt with the centre-backs and the likes of Renan and Jesse, they needed to go again, because they probably hadn’t come down from Wednesday night.

“That’s the best time to go again, and they did, no doubt about that.”

This proved to be a masterstroke by Cooper and his decision helped Forest come out of the game with a massive victory.

The Reds were brilliant against an in-form Palace team and they thoroughly deserved their three points.

As for Lingard and Lodi, they’ve come in for some criticism as two of the club’s stellar recruits in the summer.

Neither player has been as bad as some critics have made out and they’re both simply striving for consistency.

The break is probably coming at the wrong time for both Lingard and Lodi and they will hope to return in good form.

There will be more to come from the duo and they should be buoyed by Cooper’s vote of confidence.
