Former Nottingham Forest star Chris Gunter has heaped praise on Brennan Johnson ahead of the World Cup. The man with the most appearances for the Wales national team has been discussing the 21-year-old with the club’s official website.

Wales will take on the USA tomorrow night in Qatar. It will be the first time the nation has taken part in a World Cup game for 64 years.

Forest will monitor the Wales progress with intrigue. Johnson is joined in the squad by defender Neco Williams and goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey.

Gunter was something of a stalwart for Forest. He was signed by Billy Davies in 2009 and went on to make 155 appearances for the Reds during his career.

The 33-year-old has served his country with distinction. He’s made 109 appearances for his country and he will be hoping to add to that haul of caps at the World Cup.

Ahead of the tournament, he sat down with the Forest media team. He discussed the hopes of his nation at the World Cup and also had some kind words for the Reds’ young talent Johnson.

He told the official website: “Brennan has been incredible for the last couple of seasons and is showing that form now at the international level.”

Wales will be a fascinating team to watch in Qatar. What they lack in elite quality they always make up for with heart, determination and a mindset that they are never beaten even when games get tough.

Rob Page’s team do have a tough group. Iran won’t be the pushovers that everyone believes; whilst the USA have a squad full of young talent. England will be among the favourites to win the tournament.

It’s great that Forest have Johnson going to the World Cup. He is striving for consistency this season and against Crystal Palace last time out he produced arguably his strongest performance to date.

Gunter’s experience will be vital. Players like Johnson are playing at their first major tournament and he will hope to pass on any expertise as Wales aim to cause a stir once again among the big boys.
