Wales forward Harry Wilson has heaped praise on Nottingham Forest star Neco Williams after Monday’s 1-1 draw against the USA. The Reds star played almost the entire game, despite hearing of his grandad’s passing just 24 hours before the Group B clash.
Williams produced a pretty decent performance considering the emotional heartache he is going through. He’s likely to keep his place in the starting eleven for tomorrow’s huge game against Iran.
Wilson, paid £41,000-a-week, also played in that game and he spent time playing alongside Williams at Fulham last season. The 21-year-old made 17 appearances for the Cottagers, winning the league title after joining in January from Liverpool.
The player made the switch to Forest during the summer. He penned a permanent deal at the City Ground after a bid of £17.5 million was accepted by the former Premier League champions.
Now, the winger has paid tribute to his teammate. Ahead of tomorrow’s clash with the team conquered by England, Wilson spoke to The Leader to give his verdict on the performance of the Forest star.
He said: “Neco showed great courage and bravery to play the game. Everybody knows to lose a family member is never easy.
“For that to happen on the eve of his first ever World Cup game…and to put in a performance like that as well, I thought he was fantastic.
“The lads got around him and tried to make him feel as comfortable as possible. He had a lot of emotion but I thought his performance was great.”
Wilson heaped praise on Williams after Wales performance
This should give Williams a nice confidence boost. The Wales team have a wonderful team spirit and it’s no surprise to hear that his teammates are backing the Forest man after his devastating news.
Page might have a decision to make tomorrow. Although it seems likely that the Forest star will play, he will have to make completely sure that Williams is in the right frame of mind to take to the pitch.
Williams is a credit to Forest and a credit to his country though. To make an appearance like he did on Monday following his news shows that he has the heart of a lion and he’s got the backing of a whole nation.
If Wales can claim three points tomorrow against Iran it would be a massive step in the right direction. It should ensure qualification, especially if England can go and beat the USA later in the day.
