The National media in Canada have praised Nottingham Forest player Richie Laryea after Canada lost 1-0 to Belgium at the World Cup. Michy Batshuayi’s goal on the stroke of half-time meant Alphonso Davies lived to rue his first-half penalty miss.

Laryea was given the nod by boss John Herdman to start on the right-hand side. He was energetic throughout and Forest fans loved seeing him perform admirably after a frustrating time of things at the City Ground.

The 27-year-old checked in at Forest in January 2022. He made just five appearances after joining, failing to oust the superb Djed Spence from the team as the Reds raced towards promotion to the Premier League.

Laryea re-joined Toronto FC on loan in the summer. His form in the MLS ensured that Herdman selected him in his squad for the World Cup and his decision now looks to be justified.

The national media in Canada were impressed too. Two outlets gave him good scores for his energetic displays and it would seem as though the locals are hoping he plays against Croatia next up.

Sports Net wrote: “The Toronto FC defender was brilliant on both sides of the ball, logging three key passes. He nearly drew a penalty in the first half and barely conceded any ground to Belgium. Laryea was fearless.”

The Canadian Premier League official website added: “The right-back was dangerous down the right side, especially in the first half. He made a huge block in the second half when tracking back from higher up the pitch.”

This was an intriguing watch from a Forest perspective. Laryea looks like a decent player and it’s perhaps frustrating for the player that he never got a City Ground opportunity last season.

He does look like a useful player though. Last night he came up against the number two outfit in the FIFA rankings and he never looked overawed throughout his time on the pitch.

It will be interesting to see what the future looks like for Laryea. He will spend the current campaign at Toronto FC but will then head back to Forest hoping for another chance to impress.

The World Cup could see his stock rise. He’s already captured the hearts of the media in his homeland. Now, it would seem as though Forest fans are very impressed with the player also.
