Nottingham Forest star Brennan Johnson has once again been overlooked for a place in the Wales team. Rob Page’s men face Iran this morning looking to go top of Group B for a few hours at the very least.

Johnson was on the bench on Monday as Wales drew with the USA. He came on for the final 12 minutes and helped to create the chance that saw Gareth Bale equalise from the penalty spot.

The 21-year-old will be disappointed not to start the game again. Now, he will hope to play against England on Tuesday in an eagerly-anticipated clash between two home nations.

Johnson is perhaps suffering from some ordinary league form. Steve Cooper had dropped him to the bench before the break for the World Cup, although he was brilliant when the Reds beat Crystal Palace last time out.

Elsewhere, Wayne Hennessey does keep his place in goal for Wales; whilst Neco Williams will start the game after also playing against the USA on Monday.

For Johnson, he might look at his teammates with some envy. He’s exciting, quick and loves to take players on. With that in mind, it’s perhaps surprising that he’s not starting today’s game.

The youngster must stay ready though. He is likely to be called upon from the bench, with Page preferring to use the Forest man as an impact substitute at this World Cup it will seem.

Johnson must remain patient and keep himself ready. This isn’t personal from Page it’s just that he prefers other players at this moment in time.

The Forest man can still have a big part to play at this World Cup. He will know that as a young player he will have to remain patient and all he can do is wait.

Johnson was in scintillating last season. He scored 19 goals and claimed 12 assists as Forest won promotion and that made him a regular in the Wales setup.

As of yet, he’s been unable to stamp his authority on the starting eleven. His time will come though but right now for Johnson, he will have to settle for a place on the bench.
