Nottingham Forest Under-21s were beaten by Charlton in the Premier League Cup last night and Dave Rogers might have hinted that four gems are going to train with the senior ranks.

It was an exceptionally young outfit that took on the Addicks. Forest fought tooth and nail to get the win but were overcome by lesser opposition.

Dylan Gavin and Daniel Kanu scored for the visitors. Lewis Salmon pulled a late goal back after earlier missing a penalty in the first half.

There were four big absentees though and it will spark speculation that they might be heading back into training with the senior squad.

Dale Taylor, Zach Abbott, Billy Fewster and Oliver Hammond were all missing last night and that simply doesn’t make sense.

Taylor is very highly rated and he was actually on the bench as Forest defeated Crystal Palace 1-0 before the international break.

Likewise, Hammond does have some experience playing first-team football and made the bench for the first two Premier League matches during 2022/23.

Abbott and Fewster are both novices. Steve Cooper did throw the former on for the closing stages against Grimbsy in the Carabao Cup though and he’s highly rated.

Rogers might have hinted at senior call for Forest U21 stars

With Remo Freuler and Cheikhou Kouyate on course to qualify for the knockout stages of the World Cup, Cooper might be short of bodies when his team returns to training.

Neco Williams, Wayne Hennessey and Brennan Johnson will likely be coming home tomorrow but they will get a period of rest.

The young lads could benefit considerably from training with the senior professionals at the club.

Cooper has a proven track record of utilising young players and it would appear that he’s now willing to abandon that approach.

Forest face Stoke City in a friendly on Friday night and perhaps the four are being saved to feature in that game.

The future looks bright at Forest and it will be interesting to see how they get on should they get the nod to play against Championship opposition.
