Nottingham Forest midfielder Remo Freuler has weighed into the Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi debate. The Switzerland match-winner was quizzed on the elite duo following Friday’s win.

Freuler scored the decisive goal as Serbia were beaten 3-2. The result saw the Swiss through to a last-16 date against Portugal in what promises to be a fantastic World Cup occasion.

Switzerland defied the odds at Euro 2020 by knocking out world champions France. Now, they could send another tournament favourite packing at the World Cup in Qatar.

Freuler has been really good in the three games he’s played for Switzerland at the tournament. He has started in each game and looks set to play a starring role against Portugal too.

After his goal last night, he fronted the media. He was quizzed on the team spirit within the camp, Granit Xhaka and the Forest star was also found being asked whether he preferred Messi or Ronaldo.

It’s terrible news for the ex-Manchester United and current Portugal star. Freuler has thrown his weight behind the Argentine maestro, claiming he prefers the PSG star as a player.

He told Swiss outlet 20min: “They’re both by far the best footballers in the world. But, I have to say, I’m more of the Messi type.”

Ronaldo doesn’t need any help getting riled. As a result, hopefully, he won’t pick up on these quotes ahead of his meeting with Freuler next week.

The Forest man has made everyone back at the City Ground proud. He’s been brilliant at this World Cup and his goal against Serbia was superb.

Freuler won’t be finished yet either. Portugal will be tough opposition but ultimately, Switzerland will fancy their chances of a scalp.

South Korea defeated Portugal last week and it’s fair to say that the Swiss may well smell blood.

Messi will also fancy his chances of success at this tournament and perhaps Freuler can do the Argentine a favour when it comes to pipping Ronaldo to the ultimate prize.
