Djed Spence has sent Nottingham Forest defender Richie Laryea a one-word message on Instagram following the player’s participation at the World Cup. The full-back made three appearances in Qatar as Canada departed without a single point.
Laryea started the first two games against Belgium and Croatia. Canada were eliminated by the time they took on Morocco and the 27-year-old was benched by boss John Herdman.
It was a tough learning curve for a pretty young Canada side. They caught the eye in their group opener against Belgium and although they were beaten, they really should have claimed something for their efforts.
Laryea showcased his class to the Forest fan base. The defender has played very little football for the Reds, featuring just five times after checking in during January 2022.
In the summer he joined Toronto FC on a season-long loan. His form there earned him a place in the World Cup squad and he will hope to continue playing regular football when the season resumes in February.
Laryea signed a long-term contract with the Reds. Should the team lose their Premier League status this season then the Canadian might get a chance to shine during 2023/24.
Laryea sent message by Spence
It’s ironic that Spence and Laryea have so much respect for each other. It was the Tottenham starlet that kept the Canada defender out of the Forest team but clearly, they got on well.
It was easy to see why Forest went for Laryea. He is very similar to Spence in the sense that he brings a similar skillset to the team when called upon.
Laryea has taken to Instagram after the World Cup. He spoke of his disappointment but fired a warning that Canada will learn from the experience and go again.
The challenge for Laryea now is to keep producing the goods with Toronto FC. It’s a club where he is worshipped and it’s all about gaining confidence for him.
If he does that he will offer Steve Cooper a reminder of his qualities and if relegation does become a reality, he might get a shot at the Championship next season.
