Nottingham Forest goalkeeper George Shelvey looks set for a loan move with Steve Cooper keen for him to gain more first-team experience.

That’s according to The Sun’s Alan Nixon, who reports that Forest are trying to send Shelvey out on loan in January.

It’s stated that Shelvey is showing promise at Forest but there is little chance of him playing in the Premier League.

That means boss Cooper is happy for Shelvey to head out on loan for the second half of the season.

The 21-year-old really needs this opportunity.

Shelvey has come through the Forest ranks but has yet to actually make his first team debut for the club.

Shelvey did go out on loan to Truro City and Wealdstone in non-league, but those loans only added up to seven games.

A move to Mansfield Town in 2021 really didn’t work as Shelvey failed to make a single league appearance for the Stags.

Mansfield also had Manchester United talent Nathan Bishop on loan at the time and he was so good that Shelvey couldn’t get in.

That loan spell was terminated early and Shelvey isn’t exactly close to first-team action for Forest as things stand.

Dean Henderson is Cooper’s first choice with Wayne Hennessey offering experienced cover for the Manchester United loanee.

Jordan Smith is still in the Forest ranks and there is also Bosnian talent Adnan Kanuric, who joined in September and will have hopes of breaking into the first-team picture.

Shelvey is therefore way down the pecking order and six months in League Two or even the National League could be vital for his development.

Turning 22 in April, Shelvey really needs to start getting game under his belt if he is to make it at Forest.

Cooper seemingly realises that and the rest of the season could be absolutely vital for the goalkeeper’s future at the City Ground.
