Nottingham Forest hero Garry Birtles said that Remo Freuler didn’t learn from his mistakes during the clash against Southampton.

The Switzerland international was booked just before half-time for a foul after he had needlessly given the ball away.

Referee Thomas Bramall was left with little choice but to show the first yellow card of the game to the man who has just returned from the World Cup.

For such a seasoned player it was a surprise to see Freuler do something almost identical just after the interval.

On this occasion, he didn’t commit the foul but the fact he gave the ball away was very uncharacteristic of the 30-year-old.

The man who tasted European Cup glory with the Reds wasn’t impressed and said he had to start learning.

Birtles said during commentary on Fox Sports: “You’ve got to learn your lesson. He did it in the first half and ended up getting a booking for a foul. You’ve got to learn at this level otherwise you get punished.

Freuler is an experienced player and in fairness to him, he’s been brilliant for the Reds during the 2022/23 campaign.

Birtles said Freuler didn’t learn from mistakes and he was right on this occasion

The Forest legend is likely to have seen Forest an awful lot this season and he knows the game extremely well.

He was right about Freuler but there is no need to go too over the top with his performance against Southampton.

It was his first bad moment in some time and he will be the first to admit that this wasn’t the best version of him as a player.

Freuler cost £7.5 million from Atalanta in the summer and he’s looked like a very useful signing.

Birtles did have a point on this occasion, however, and he will hope to learn from his errors quickly.
