Alex Mighten is set to return to Nottingham Forest from Sheffield Wednesday and the player could now be in limbo. According to The Star, the winger will return to the City Ground before the window closes at the end of the month.

It’s unclear which club is keen to terminate the deal. Given that he’s not really hit the mark at Hillsborough it seems likely that it’s the League One outfit that would make the call.

Mighten has made just 14 appearances in all competitions this season for Wednesday. It was anticipated that he’d take League One by storm but that hasn’t been the case at all.

The talented youngster was loaned out in August amid a plethora of new recruits at the City Ground. He did come off the bench in the opening-day defeat at Newcastle though and that leave him in limbo.

Mighten is unable to register for a third club this season. As a result, he can only play for Wednesday or Forest between now and the end of 2022/23, unless the Reds apply for him to receive special dispensation from the FA.

The England youth international won’t be happy with how his loan went in South Yorkshire. However, there is a suggestion that the syle of play preferred by Darren Moore never really suited Mighten.

The 20-year-old has a bright future. Whether or not he’s a Premier League player right now remains to be seen and it’s fair to say he will be some way down the pecking order when he returns.

Cooper has a knack with young players, however. He’d rather give minutes to a burgeoning talent like Mighten than perhaps Emmanuel Dennis at this stage, with his application often called into question.

The academy starlet might not be a bad option to have on the bench. Forest are permitted nine substitutes in the Premier League and just lately the options have been somewhat defence-minded.

Gary Brazil is a huge admirer of Mighten. In 2020, he Tweeted that Mighten was developing into an ‘elite’ footballer and was set for a bright future.
