Nottingham Forest star Taiwo Awoniyi will be out of action for months, Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna has claimed on Twitter. The striker hasn’t played since the 1-0 win away at Southampton when the Nigerian scored the winner.
The 25-year-old was slowly but surely getting up to scratch with the Premier League. His goal at St Mary’s Stadium was his fifth in all competitions and his form of late had been top-notch.
Now, it looks as though Forest must do without him for the foreseeable future. The news offers a further indication of why Forest are ramping up their efforts to sign Newcastle striker Chris Wood.
Awoniyi signed for the Reds in the summer for £17.5 million from Union Berlin. It’s taken him some time to settle but since the World Cup, he’s looked good as a left-sided striker.
Forest do have some options. If Wood signs he will join Sam Surridge and Emmanuel Dennis in the squad and this news likely means that either of those will be allowed to leave this month
Awoniyi looked to have injured his groin during the game against Southampton. The hope originally that is was nothing more than fatigue, although that now looks to have been wishful thinking.
Awoniyi out of action for several months
This is a bit of a blow for the Reds. When it comes to picking up injuries, since the World Cup, it’s not rained it’s poured!
Awoniyi adds to a growing list of concerns among the Forest ranks. Dean Henderson and Willy Boly will likely miss Saturday, with Moussa Niakhate a long-term casualty.
The beauty of this news is that the transfer window is open. Awoniyi being ruled out for months might just tempt Evangelos Marinkais to throw his chequebook on the table once again.
The Nigerian will be desperate to get back for some of the remaining games and it will be intriguing to hear what Cooper says about this in his press meeting tomorrow afternoon.
