Forest have been scouring the market for a striker since the turn of the year. Now, with Taiwo Awoniyi out injured for two months, the need for a new player has been intensified.
Wood signed for Newcastle during the January transfer window of 2022. He was snapped up from relegation-threatened rivals Burnley for a fee of £25 million and helped the Magpies stave off relegation.
Now, he could be on the move once again during a January window. Eddie Howe has sanctioned a departure, with Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak now both back to full fitness.
Newcastle are busy chasing a Champions League berth. They sit nicely inside the top four at the moment and offloading Wood on loan to Forest should allow them to bring a reinforcement in.
Now, a report from Simon Stone of BBC Sport has claimed when the Reds might sign Wood. He thinks there is a genuine chance that the £80,000-a-week player could be signed in time to play at Bournemouth on Saturday.
Nottingham Forest could sign Wood for the weekend
This would be a massive boost. If Forest could head for a big game against Bournemouth on the south coast with Wood in their squad it would be a welcome addition to the squad.
The Cherries are in bad form at the moment and Wood might smell blood among the Bournemouth caps. With Awoniyi injured for the trip, Steve Cooper would dearly love to have another striker at his disposal.
At 31-years-old, Wood is hardly a signing to place your hat on for the future. In the here and now, however, he might be the ideal striker to help Forest maintain their Premier League status.
He’s scored 54 goals in the Premier League across spells with Burnley and Newcastle. Forest will hope that he can add one or two more to that tally between now and the end of the season if he does sign.
