Nottingham Forest have made an ambitious move to try and sign Newcastle star Allan Saint-Maximin, according to The Telegraph. The winger is fancied by the Reds’ sporting director Filippo Giraldi who is keen to add some pace to the frontline.
The Reds have already signed a player from Newcastle during the January transfer window. They swooped to sign Chris Wood on loan until the end of the season, with that deal likely to be made permanent.
Saint-Maximin has fallen down the pecking order at Newcastle. He’s not started a game for Eddie Howe since November, although it’s claimed that Newcastle don’t want him to leave.
The 25-year-old has been at St James’ Park since 2019 when he signed from Nice. He’s made 108 appearances for the Magpies, scoring 13 goals and registering 19 assists.
Saint-Maximin has earned plenty of plaudits since signing for Newcastle. In February of last year, Rob Lee called him ‘unplayable’ after one particular performance against Everton.
The 25-year-old did actually start for Newcastle earlier in the season. The two teams met on the opening day of the campaign and the Frenchman was in fine form during the 2-0 win.
Forest ask about signing Saint-Maximin
The Reds are leaving no stone unturned in their quest to sign players this month. Three players have checked in but it would appear that another forward is definitely on the radar.
Arnaut Danjuma has been linked. The Dutchman is set to sign for Tottenham though and that is a race that Forest look to have lost out on.
Saint-Maximin could be unobtainable too in fairness. Howe doesn’t want him to leave and perhaps this is far too ambitious for the Reds to even consider at this time of the season.
The talented forward earns £93,000-a-week at Newcastle. If the club does have a change of heart about letting him leave, he would definitely be a remarkable signing for the club.
Rumour rating: 8/10 – Wow! This would be quite something. Furthermore, the source is actually extremely reliable.
The only reason we’ve not gone for a 10/10 is that we just don’t think the club can get it over the line.
Newcastle are chasing a Champions League place and surely, Howe will want as many options available to him as possible.
If Forest can do a deal, however, it would be an unreal signing.
