What’s the Story: Nottingham Forest v Manchester United:

The Reds will take on Manchester United tonight in their first League Cup semi-final since 1992.

Back in Brian Clough’s heyday, the Reds used to reach Wembley on a seemingly annual basis.

Before the play-off final of last season, Forest had not reached the new national stadium as a club.

Now they stand just two games away from another Wembley date, although United are in formidable form.

Before Sunday’s defeat to table-topping Arsenal, Erik ten Hag’s men were being touted as potential title winners.

Under the Dutchman, United have showcased the sort of class that title-winners possess and they might only be a few signings away from challenging next season.

Forest are in a different situation at the other end of the table and their remit is to stay in the Premier League this season.

Since the World Cup, the Reds have showcased a steely determination that wasn’t evident before Qatar and Steve Cooper deserves credit.

Forest still have work to do but now sitting in 13th place in the table, they can at least start to look up rather than over their shoulder.

Tonight has been called a free hit by some supporters but Cooper won’t be seeing it as anything like that.

He wants Nottingham Forest to be challenging for trophies like they were in the nineties again and this is a huge opportunity.

Broadcast details

Tonight’s game will be shown live on Sky Sports Main Event. Coverage begins at 7pm, with kick-off at 8pm.

As ever, the game will also be broadcast live on BBC Radio Nottingham. Colin Fray will be in the hot seat from 7pm.
