Nottingham Forest have missed out on the re-signing of Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow. Keith Downie claimed last night that the Reds were keen to sign their former player but he’s now set to join Hull on loan.

According to I News, the goalkeeper will spend the rest of the season with the Championship outfit. There is also an option for the Tigers to turn it into a permanent deal.

Darlow has been a sound servant to Newcastle. He arrived from Forest in 2014 when the infamous Fawaz Al Hasawi was overseeing transfer matters and was immediately loaned back to the Reds for the season.

In just short of eight years with the Magpies, he’s helped the club win promotion back to the Premier League. He will leave having played exactly 100 times for Newcastle and never let anyone down.

In recent years, he’s not been considered part of the squad. Still, he’s proved a model professional for the club and now the 32-year-old will head to Hull and hope to play some football.

Darlow came through the youth ranks at the City Ground. He became the club’s number-one goalkeeper after Lee Camp had departed for Norwich and his stock rose considerably.

He made 111 appearances for the Reds, keeping 35 clean sheets for the club. Darlow was sold against Stuart Pearce’s wishes, with the former owner going behind the back of his manager.

Steve Bruce praised Darlow when he was in charge of Newcastle. After a game against Liverpool in 2020 he called the ex-Forest star ‘terrific’ after some superb saves.

Forest have missed out on Darlow and it’s not the end of the world

Darlow will look forward to getting back between the posts for Hull as they bid to finish the season with a flourish. The Tigers are 16th in the Championship and sit eight points off the top six.

Forest signing Darlow would have been a risk, to say the least. At 32, he’s coming towards the twilight of his career and furthermore, he’s not played much football at all of late.

Since October 2021, Darlow has made just a single Carabao Cup appearance. As a result, there will be an element of match sharpness lacking from the goalkeeper’s game at the moment.

Forest will almost certainly look to sign a goalkeeper this month. However, it doesn’t seem a majorly big deal that the club appear to have missed out on the signing of Darlow.
