Nottingham Forest are closing in on the permanent signing of Newcastle United central midfielder Jonjo Shelvey. According to The Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards.

The Reds are keen to continue bolstering their ranks before the deadline on Tuesday. Gustavo Scarpa, Chris Wood and Danilo have all signed for the club so far this month.

It would appear that Forest have moved quickly to sign Shelvey. This link has seemingly come out of nowhere and the Reds are looking to press ahead with this one.

Shelvey has fallen way down the pecking order under Eddie Howe. The 30-year-old has played for just 34 minutes in the Premier League this season and would have been out of contract in the summer.

Now, he’s set to leave the Magpies after 202 appearances for the club. He will become the 25th player that Forest have landed since they won promotion to the Premier League in May.

Shelvey signed for Newcastle in 2016. He joined from Swansea City for £12 million and quickly established himself in the Magpies team. Earlier in his career he also won the League Cup with Liverpool.

Now 30-years-old, Shelvey will be keen to get back to playing regular first-team football and he will fancy his chances of doing exactly that during his time at the City Ground.

Former teammate Isaac Hayden is a huge fan of Shelvey. He called him a Rolls Royce in March 2022 after a performance during a victory over Brighton for Newcastle.

The Reds have identified another midfield playmaker as someone who needs to be added to their ranks. One thing that Shlevey will add is some Premier League experience as Forest bid to stay up.

Steve Cooper will hope that a couple of players can be added to the ranks before the deadline on Tuesday. He will hope that the squad can be capable of guiding Forest to 17th or higher in the table.

It will be interesting to see what the numbers are with regard to Shelvey. The transfer fee is unlikely to be high and he currently earns around £70,000-a-week at St James’ Park.

Rumour rating: 8/10 – There is a lot to like about this deal! Shelvey is proven in the top flight and that can’t be a bad thing.

The Reds won’t be finished here and another signing or two could be made before the Tuesday deadline.
