Nottingham Forest have been linked with a bizarre move for free agent Andre Ayew on transfer deadline day, according to 90Min. The Reds are still in the mix to sign one forward player before the 11pm cut-off.

Everton, West Ham, Bournemouth and Southampton are also in the mix to sign the player too. Ayew is available on a free transfer after leaving Al Sadd earlier this month and interest is rife.

Forest boss Steve Cooper knows all about Ayew. He managed the versatile forward at Swansea City and the player performed well under the influence of the Welshman.

Cooper discussed Ayew in 2020 and he said: “Andre’s a top player. He’s a pleasure to work with and he’s a great guy. He is our main man and he thrives off that status.”

Ayew is 33-years-old now and that is definitely a cause for concern. Cooper does know him well though and perhaps if other options don’t come to fruition, the Reds may look to swoop.

At Swansea, the Ghana international was very impressive. He scored 47 goals in 209 appearances and he works hard to bring other players into games as well as scoring goals.

Ayew was in the Ghana squad at the World Cup in Qatar last year. He took his tally of caps to 113 but did miss a crucial penalty in the final group game against Uruguay.

Forest linked with bizarre Ayew move

This might have been a useful signing three of four years ago for Forest. It does smack of a link that has thrown Forest into the conversation purely because of the Cooper connection.

Swansea reached the play-offs twice under Cooper and Ayew was instrumental on both occasions. As a result, it’s only natural that Forest’s name will be mentioned in the conversation.

It’s a signing that doesn’t make sense though. He scored 22 goals in 39 appearances for Al-Sadd but his best days are firmly behind him and the Reds would be wise to look elsewhere.

Given that he’s available for free, perhaps there’s a small chance he ends up at Forest. At this stage, however, it would represent too much of a gamble to place Ayew into a relegation battle.
