Jonjo Shelvey has begun training with his Nottingham Forest teammates, with some footage captured on the club’s TikTok channel. The midfielder signed from Newcastle on transfer deadline day after seven years in the North East.

The signing of Shelvey has naturally raised a few eyebrows. Shelvey has struggled with injury problems in recent years and actually arrived at Forest in the midst of some treatment for a hamstring problem.

Shelvey has played six times for England during his career. He’s spent time playing Premier League football for Liverpool where he won the League Cup in 2012, Swansea and more recently Newcastle.

The maestro helped Newcastle back into the Premier League during the 2016/17 campaign. In total he made 202 appearances for the Magpies, bagging 18 goals and claiming 25 assists.

Upon leaving St James’ Park, Jamaal Lascelles paid tribute to him. He called him a great player and claimed he was really sad to see his title-winning teammate depart the club.

Now, Shelvey has a different challenge altogether. Having made just five appearances for Newcastle this season, he now swaps their top-four push for a survival mission.

The Reds are 13th in the Premier League and will now hope to kick on. Forest are hoping to avoid relegation back to the Championship and Shelvey could help them.

This will come as a huge boost to the Reds. They will welcome Shelvey’s ability to spray passes around the field and that attribute could be massive for the team.

Steve Cooper was keen to sign Shelvey during January. He was at Liverpool coaching the youth team when the midfielder was at Anfield and he knows his qualities well.

Shelvey will have to work hard to get a place in the team, however. Remo Freuler has captained the side of late, whilst Danilo and Orel Mangala are also playing rather well.

At 30-years-old, Shelvey still has a lot to offer. Now, it will be intriguing to see what role he plays when Cooper hands him a first chance to shine.
