Failed Nottingham Forest manager Chris Hughton has been handed the managerial job with the Ghana international team. He had been working in an advisory role but has now replaced Otto Addo.

Hughton hasn’t been in charge of a team since working at Forest. Now, he will take over the country as they bid to qualify for the African Cup of Nations next year.

Forest fans won’t remember the Hughton era too fondly. His football was drab and many fans were relieved that the majority of his matches were behind closed doors amid the pandemic.

Hughton was sacked after one point from seven games of the 2021/22 campaign. He was replaced by Steve Cooper in September and the rest as they say is history with Forest now in the Premier League.

The 64-year-old oversaw 53 games in charge of the Reds. He claimed just 14 victories and departed with a 26.4% win ratio, with fans incensed at his ability to stifle a talented squad.

Hughton will have a tough job on his hands with Ghana. They recently suffered an embarrassing defeat to Madagascar and finished bottom of their group at the World Cup in Qatar.

The ex-Forest boss will be in charge of a current Reds player. Andre Ayew captained the team at the World Cup and it remains to be seen if he keeps that role under Hughton.

This could go one of two ways. It could be a disaster akin to his time with Forest, or it could be exactly what Hughton needs to thrive again in the modern era.

At Forest, Hughton arrived with a sound reputation. He took Newcastle, Norwich and Brighton to the Premier League but couldn’t really get things right at the City Ground.

There was a firm indication that the modern game had caught up with him. His strategy was pretty ordinary and more often than not the decisions he made were reactive rather than proactive.

As a result, only time will tell whether Ghana live to regret this decision.
