A report from The Athletic has explained why Nottingham Forest pulled out of a deal to sign Brenner in January. The FC Cincinnati centre-forward was the subject of a bid from Forest during the transfer window.
The Reds targeted Brenner as an option to bolster their strike force. With Taiwo Awoniyi injured, the club worked tirelessly to try and get a deal for a striker over the line before the deadline.
Forest weren’t the only club to take a look at Brenner. The player would have bolstered the club’s Brazilian contingency further and at 23-years-old he’d have been viewed as one for the future.

Brenner enjoyed a sound goalscoring campaign during the last MLS campaign. He bagged 18 goals for his club and also registered six assists throughout an emphatic season.
As a result of those numbers, European interest has been rife. Forest, however, felt that there was a problem and it proved big enough to tempt them away from the race to sign him.
The Reds saw a bid rejected and they were set to go in with another offer. Brenner was even training alone during January, with the club’s coaching staff giving him the green light to sign for another club.
The Athletic claims, however, that the Reds had other reservations. It was deemed that they didn’t feel they could obtain the relevant work permit to sign Brenner given that he’s never represented Brazil.
Reason Forest pulled out of Brenner deal explained in report
This might have to be one for the backburner for Forest right now. In the summer, the work permit situation is unlikely to have changed and other clubs might snoop round.
If they don’t, perhaps he will remain on the club’s radar. Indeed, if he does get Brazil recognition there is a chance that he might have a better chance of obtaining one in the future.

Forest didn’t manage to land a striker. Andre Ayew arrived on a free transfer but it’s fair to say that he’s viewed as a short-term option and perhaps the Reds will target another striker in the summer.
As things stand, that player might not be Brenner…
