Jonjo Shelvey signed for Nottingham Forest on transfer deadline day and he’s already having an impact on his teammates. The Athletic has now explained how the former Newcastle United star has made an impression on the Forest squad.

The 30-year-old transferred to the City Ground following seven years at Newcastle. He chose to leave in search of regular senior action and Magpies boss Eddie Howe eventually granted him his wish.

Shelvey is a seasoned performer who operates in the heart of the midfield. He won the League Cup with Liverpool in 2012 and has also made six appearances for England during a colourful career.

During 2022/23, the Reds midfielder had found regular football hard to come by. He made just five appearances in all competitions and at this stage of his career, he simply wants to play.

Shelvey needs to gain some consistency in his play. Naturally, however, the more he gets selected by Steve Cooper, the more he will become the player that everyone knows he can be.

The midfielder came on for his debut in the game against Fulham. In that game, there were glimpses of his quality as he tried to get Forest a foothold in a game that they were trailing in.

His performance in that game promoted Cooper to start him against Manchester City. That proved a tough outing for Shelvey but he did exceptionally well during this time on the pitch.

The Athletic has profiled Shelvey and it would appear he’s having quite the impact on the Forest dressing room. It’s claimed that his purposeful approach to training has helped him warm to his teammates.

Shelvey has faced criticism over his attitude throughout his career. The player does have a tendency to get foolishly sent off or do something silly but now he looks to be learning from the error of his ways.

Steve Cooper appears to want Shelvey at the club. The signing will provide the dressing room with an injection of experience and that can only be a good thing in the quest for survival.

The challenge for Shelvey is to gain some consistency. Everyone knows what a good player he can be at his best and the challenge will be for Steve Cooper to get the best out of him.
