Lewis O’Brien is set to find out if he will be given the green light to leave Nottingham Forest and join Blackburn on loan on Tuesday. The EFL outfit have forked out £100,0000 so far in fees but the saga does now look to be drawing to a close.
O’Brien was allowed to leave the City Ground on transfer deadline day. A deal was agreed upon for the 24-year-old to go to Ewood Park, with the club also agreeing to sign him permanently for £10 million if they won promotion to the Premier League.

With just hours remaining of the transfer window, however, a problem arose. Blackburn submitted some paperwork to the EFL but it proved to be the wrong form that the EFL needed to receive.
O’Brien made 14 appearances for the Reds during the first half of 2022/23. He signed for the club from Huddersfield for £10 million and looked to be adapting nicely to life in the Premier League.
Steve Cooper had already made the difficult decision to take O’Brien out of his 25-man squad. It seemed for all the world as though he’d join Blackburn and Forest acted accordingly.
Unfortunately for O’Brien, he’s now been left in limbo. He won’t be able to play football for the Reds until next season at the earliest and a loan move to the MLS is also an option for the player.
O’Brien will find out if he can join Blackburn on Tuesday
Hopefully, common sense can prevail here in this situation. However, the fact that it’s already dragged on for almost a month does make it seem very unlikely that the EFL will sanction the move.
That could see O’Brien forced into a move to the MLS instead. The youngster is far too good to be sat twiddling his thumbs and he will hope that he can get some game time somewhere.

Blackburn are going well in the Championship. They’d dearly love to have O’Brien to call upon for their run-in and they will have everything crossed that the player can join the club.
Tuesday now looks like being d-day for O’Brien. Hopefully, the club receive some positive news and the young midfielder can head to Ewood Park and play some games.
