Luton Town boss Rob Edwards has hailed Nottingham Forest loanee Ethan Horvath despite his nightmare moment last night. The American stopper allowed a tame effort by Zian Flemming to squirm through his hands to give Millwall an early lead.

The 27-year-old has been on loan with the Hatters during 2022/23. He’s actually been performing quite well for the club, keeping 13 clean sheets during the current campaign. Last night, however, provided a moment he will be keen to forget.

Horvath was allowed to leave the club on loan following promotion to the Premier League with Forest. The player signed from Club Brugge actually got on in the final, replacing the injured Brice Samba in stoppage time.

Edwards is in no mood to start placing blame at the door of Horvath, however. He’s leapt to the defence of his goalkeeper and praised him for his performances since he arrived at the club.

He told Luton Today: “We’ll all support him as we support every one of our lads.

“He’s mentally tough, he’s been brilliant, so for me, the goal counts, of course it does, but it was the bit before that I’ll really look at and focus on. They shouldn’t be getting that opportunity in the first place.

“The mistake is a mistake and that’s human error, no problem with that. Ethan has been outstanding for us.”

The Sky Sports commentator called it a ‘terrible moment’ and Horvath won’t want to dwell on it. Luton are in the midst of a play-off chase and he must dust himself down quickly.

Edwards has done the right thing. He knew he’d made a mistake and appeared to apologise to his teammates straight away. The last thing he needs is his manager sticking the boot in too.

The comments from the boss suggest he will keep his place. Horvath has quickly established himself as the club’s number one and largely he’s done quite well.

Horvath did make a couple of errors for Forest last season too. As a result, it appears that the odd error is an apparent chink in the armour of the American goalkeeper.
