Nottingham Forest defender Serge Aurier has explained the situation over his contract to The Athletic. The Ivory Coast star signed for the Reds in the summer on a free transfer and speculation has started over the length of his contract.
It turns out that the player has only signed a one-year deal with the Reds. However, it looks like the player will be sticking around at the City Ground if the team can avoid relegation back to the Championship.
Aurier could walk away from the club if they’re relegated. That element of his contract doesn’t really come as a huge surprise given that the 30-year-old has played for PSG, Tottenham and Villarreal during his career.
Still, it would appear that Aurier is very happy on Trentside. He also insists that his focus isn’t on a new deal for himself but he’s more geared towards helping Forest stay in the Premier League.
Aurier told The Athletic: “If we stay up, I have one more year. I signed because I believe we can stay up. Maybe next season, we are not in the Premier League. We need to see. If we stay in the Premier League, why not?
“But right now, it is too difficult to decide something. My first goal is to help the team stay in the Premier League. That is my number one objective. After that, we will see.
“We have a lot of time. I am enjoying my time here. I’ve played with a lot of big teams, but I enjoy it more here because the fans are amazing. You feel that on the pitch and off the pitch. I feel the love.”
Situation explained over Aurier contract
It goes without saying that Forest will lose some players if the Reds are relegated. Aurier is likely to be one of those, and he’d likely still manage to get himself hooked up with another Premier League club.
Aurier has arguably been the signing of the season for Forest. Despite a glut of big-money signings, it’s Aurier checking in on a freebie that has delighted the fan base.
The experienced player has bowled the fans over with a string of fine performances. He’s quickly dispossessed Neco Williams in the right-back spot and Forest will hope he can recover from his injury quickly.
