Nottingham Forest have won an award in this month’s edition of Four Four Two magazine. The Reds came out on top as the reputable football publication rated all of the 92 clubs based on their crest alone.
Forest’s tree is symbolic to fans of the City Ground-based outfit. It sits proudly on the four corners of the ground and has been on the club’s shirts since the seventies.
Forest came out on top with a pretty random list of clubs making the top five. Wolves came second, with Barrow, Barnsley and Newcastle all just behind. Liverpool came sixth on the list.
Four Four Two wrote about the crest: “The tree, the font, the funkiness – archetypal in its simplicity, Forest’s crest is stunning proof that sometimes less is more. There’s a reason it’s barely been altered since its debut almost half a century ago. Art.”
Forest have won award for their club crest
This is certainly a nice accolade to have. Four Four Two are renowned for doing things properly and their magazine fetched up 350 issues with their latest April edition of the magazine.
This history of the club crest goes way back. Fores first unveiled the tree design back in 1973. It was designed by David Lewis a graphic artist from Nottingham.
Interestingly, Mr Lewis entered a competition with his decision. It came when it was discovered that the club couldn’t copyright the town’s coat of arms on the old crest.
Lewis won £25 for winning the competition, although the real prize was far bigger than that.
The tree tips its hat to the borough of Sherwood, with the wavy lines underneath representing the River Trent where the City Ground sits.
It is perhaps quite interesting that the Reds haven’t made a change to the crest over the years. Several similar-sized clubs have changed, most notably Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday.
There have been some small alterations over the years. More recently the Reds have added two stars to the badge to symbolise the two European Cups won in 1979 and 1980.
