Steve Cooper has delivered an injury update on Nottingham Forest midfielder Ryan Yates to Nottinghamshire Live. The 25-year-old was substituted during Friday’s 2-1 defeat to Newcastle at the City Ground.

Yates was returning to the starting line-up for the first time in five games. He has struggled with an unknown injury problem that had hampered his progress this season.

The academy graduate was a welcome return to the side. He was on the pitch as Forest took the lead but had been withdrawn by the time Alexander Isak score the match-winning penalty.

Yates is crucial to the Forest team and they can ill-afford to keep losing him. He was wearing the captain’s armband on Friday and he’s clearly a respected member of the team.

Cooper isn’t quite sure what, if any, the problem is just yet. He was quizzed on his captain after the game and he will now await results from the medical staff.

He told Nottinghamshire Live: “I think it was his shoulder. I haven’t seen anybody. I had a quick chat with the lads after, so I’ll have to find out.”

The Reds desperately need this problem to be cleared up by the time the team next plays. Forest have a make-or-break game against Wolves on the horizon and Yates is badly needed.

Cooper knows how important the talented midfielder is. He can ill afford any more problems with injured players and the Reds will be doing their utmost to get him right.

Yates has gone full circle at Forest. For years some supporters never really understood what he brought to the team but now it’s pretty unanimous that he’s a major player under Cooper.
