Ally McCoist doesn’t want Steve Cooper to lose Nottingham Forest job

Ally McCoist has jumped to the defence of Nottingham Forest head coach Steve Cooper live on air ahead of tonight’s game against Leeds United.

The Reds face a crunch trip to Elland Road this evening. A defeat could actually push them into the bottom three, with speculation mounting over the head coach’s future.

McCoist has used his platform on TalkSPORT to defend the City Ground chief. He’s hoping that things can turn around and that Forest can give him more time.

Cooper came under fire earlier in the season. On that occasion, the club handed the 43-year-old a new contract and McCoist is hoping that they stick by him once again.

The pundit told TalkSPORT: “I really hope they stand by him. The job he’s done at Forest has been phenomenal.

“They’ve still got an excellent chance to stay up. Their home form is pretty good and I think most people outside of Forest would have expected them to be about where they are at this stage of the season.

“They’re right in it of course but I’m not sure another manager will help. When he got his new contract I thought ‘fair play to them for that’, so I’m hopeful that they won’t sack him.”

It’s no secret that the Marinakis hierarchy sees everything that goes on social media. If that is the case, they will be in no doubt over whether or not they should sack Cooper.

McCoist is spot on! It would be comical for Forest to sack the manager just months after handing him a show of loyalty and giving him a new long-term deal.

The Reds could sink into the bottom three tonight but it would be the first time that has happened since the break for the World Cup.

It’s a tough old school in the Premier League and even if the result isn’t right this evening, all wouldn’t be lost for Forest.

Teams who sack their managers at this stage of the season rarely improve. If anything it would likely spark another transition period and the Reds would probably be relegated anyway.

Evangelos Marinakis would be wise to listen to McCoist’s advice.
