Henry Winter is surprised at something Nottingham Forest have done today

Reputable journalist Henry Winter believes that Nottingham Forest didn’t need to release a statement regarding the future of head coach Steve Cooper.

The man who has been down the City Ground several times this season was speaking live on TalkSPORT during this afternoon’s Hawksbee and Jacobs Show.

Winter has spoken about Forest fondly this season. He’s often lauded the club for its tradition and has covered several Premier League games at the stadium during 2022/23.

Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has today released a statement regarding the future of Cooper. He had come under some pressure after a run of eight games without a win.

Winter feels that the club deserves credit for the sentiment but claims that it wasn’t something that they really needed to do.

He told TalkSPORT: “I don’t understand why Forest needed to put it out. He’s worshipped at the City Ground. Even if Forest are relegated they will still sing his name for what he did last season.

“He’s been given this huge squad to deal with and he’s an outstanding coach anyway. I think it’s great and he absolutely deserves the time.

“Fair play to the club for releasing the statement but I don’t think they needed to.”

The Times journalist does have a point. However, Marinakis is very shrewd and perhaps this movement today will prove to be a masterstroke.

The owner knows that fans are up in arms. He knows that their backing has been unrivalled this season and he wants them all on board.

Sacking Cooper would undo lots of hard work over the last 18 months. Thankfully, for now, the owner has ensured that he makes the clever decision.

Releasing public backing is perhaps a strange situation. Marinakis clearly isn’t a fan of the media speculation though and at least now the full focus can be on Saturday’s game.
