TalkSPORT pundit Danny Murphy has delivered his verdict live on air after Nottingham Forest sacked sporting director Filippo Giraldi. The Italian figure was dismissed after just six months at the City Ground, with a short statement released on the club’s website.

It never rains it pours on Trentisde. Just three months after Dane Murphy departed, Forest are now looking for another key figure behind the scenes.

Whenever results go awry on the pitch, it seems that Evangelos Marinakis gets trigger-happy. In October he fired George Syrianos and Andy Scott after Forest won just one of the opening 10 matches of the season.

Giraldi appears to be the man who has carried the can for a poor recruitment drive in January. Seven new players were added with Keylor Navas, Felipe and Danilo the pick of the bunch. Murphy has suggested that the now departed Forest figure couldn’t have been very good.

He told TalkSPORT: “I think a lot depends on what the role of the sporting director is. It does seem a short-term around. He must have been bad! They all need to take responsibility. Steve Cooper included, he can’t shy away from criticism. They signed too many players and everyone at the football club has to take responsibility.

The pundit isn’t really wrong here. Clearly, Marinakis isn’t happy with the level of signing he made in January and has duly handed the Italian his relevant paperwork.

The likes of Jonjo Shelvey, Chris Wood and Andre Ayew simply haven’t worked out. Murphy is also quite right to suggest that Cooper shouldn’t be immune to a certain level of criticism either.

The challenge for Marinakis is to now get things right. He needs to get some sort of structure in place and make sure he leaves them to oversee things moving in the right direction.

Forest are slipping ever closer to the Championship. As a result, the next backroom decision could be the most important that the owner has ever made.
