A report has explained how Steve Cooper has viewed the training performance levels of Nottingham Forest man Jonjo Shelvey recently.

The Athletic claims that the 31-year-old was sent home last week. Shelvey was unhappy after being told he would be a substitute against Liverpool.

Forest added Shelvey to their ranks in January. He was a surprise addition to the ranks from Newcastle, with the player joining on a permanent basis.

The man with six caps for England has made eight appearances for Forest. Already, it would seem as though the player’s attitude has come under scrutiny at the City Ground.

Shelvey has made a couple of alarming errors. He gave away a penalty against Everton and produced a comical clearance during a defeat against Aston Villa that cost Forest a goal.

With that in mind, it’s laughable that he’s got the hump with Cooper. Furthermore, it would seem that his efforts in training have been underwhelming too.

The latest report claims that Cooper has informed Shelvey that his work rate simply won’t do.

One thing that the head coach has done superbly well at Forest is creating a group and impeccable team spirit.

Last season, Cooper spoke about all of his players putting the work in on the training ground and he prides himself on that.

Who’d have thought that Shelvey would have caused a problem at the City Ground? It didn’t take a rocket scientist, did it?

Forest signing Shelvey didn’t look like a great move. The Reds were always going to be involved in a relegation battle and he’s hardly the type of player needed.

Cooper is one of the most respected British coaches in football. For Shelvey to rile him, he’s really exceeded himself.

The challenge for the midfielder now is clear. He must get back into training and really increase his work rate.

If he does that, Cooper might call a truce and start to utilise him during the team’s run in.
