Nottingham Forest promotion hero Philip Zinckernagel has seemingly decided where he’d like to play his football next season.

The Reds cult hero was integral for Forest during 2021/22, scoring and assisting some mightily important goals during the campaign.

Zinckernagel was the second summer signing made by the Reds when Chris Hughton was preparing for his first full season in charge.

He came into the City Ground from Watford on a season-long loan and began to shine when Steve Cooper replaced Hughton in September.

In 50 appearances for the Reds, he scored seven goals and claimed 10 assists as Forest reached the Promised Land of the Premier League.

Now, he’s doing great things in Belgium with Standard Liege. He’s on loan with the club after signing permanently for Olympiacos but then falling out with the head coach.

It would appear that he’s made his mind up on where he’d like to play his football next season too.

He told SDNA: “My managers are in talks with Standard and Olympiacos. I’ve said before that I want to stay, but it’s just not up to me.

“Three parties are involved. Standard will always remain in my heart, even if the agreement is not reached.”

With Forest’s situation currently unclear at this stage and Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis might be better off hanging fire.

Given that he’s still at the mercy of Marinakis, perhaps an emotional return to Forest is something that would tempt Zinckernagel.

Last season the player was fantastic in the Championship and if Forest go down, surely Cooper would welcome him with open arms into his squad.

Zinckernagel is on fire this season in Belgium and there is absolutely no surprise he’d love to stay.

During 2022/23, he’s found the net 11 times and has also registered two assists at the club that he clearly holds close to his heart.
