Nottingham Forest midfielder Remo Freuler played 90 minutes on Friday night as Switzerland defeated Andorra 2-1. The Reds performer scored for his country as they flattered to deceive against the minnows.

Freuler endured a frustrating first season at Forest on the whole. He did play regularly during Forest’s good run of form around the New Year but he found himself out of the reckoning during the run-in.

The 31-year-old didn’t feature at all during the final six games of the 2022/23 campaign. Steve Cooper preferred to go with other options, leaving Freuler frustrated on the bench.

Freuler signed for £7.5 million from Atalanta in the summer. There he was a cult hero and made 260 appearances for the Serie A club, playing and captaining the team in the Champions League.

Shortly after Forest had finished their campaign, Freuler was spotted back at the club where he spent many years. He was saying a proper goodbye to the supporters he left behind in the summer of 2022.

Following his performance against Andorra last night, he received some praise, with national Swiss outlet 20min calling him one of the nation’s two best players on the night.

They wrote: “Opened the evening with his goal for 1-0, after having previously run strongly into free space. Assets in the game release. Had his feet in the game even before 2-0.”

It’s been quite tricky for the midfielder during 2022/23. He’s had to get used to playing in a new country and ultimately, Forest haven’t really played a style of football to suit Freuler.

What the future holds for the experienced performer remains to be seen. The Reds would probably welcome a club coming in for him this summer as they try to reshuffle ahead of next season.

Freuler has had his moments. However, it’s fair to suggest that they’ve probably come all too infrequently for him to really win over those who seem hellbent on criticising him.

It’s impossible to boast Freuler’s CV and be considered a bad player. It could just be that he’s not quite suited to the way that Forest player and perhaps all parties would welcome a transfer this summer.
