Three Nottingham Forest players were picked out for praise last night, despite a 5-0 defeat to Rennes at St George’s Park. The Reds were battered by the Ligue 1 outfit and offered lots of questions ahead of the new season.

The Forest correspondent for The Athletic, Paul Taylor, was in attendance at the game. Afterwards, he picked out Morgan Gibbs-White, Ola Aina and Anthony Elanga as the only three players deserving of praise.

This was an awful night for Forest. They were woefully inept defensively, shot-shy going forward and in truth, the team looked lethargic and in urgent need of some freshness through new signings.

Forest are working hard to sign new players. So far, Aina and Elanga are the only two new arrivals to bolster Steve Cooper’s squad and it’s fair to say that more are required before the season gets underway.

Last night, Aina did look bright again. He lined up at left-back and once again showed some neat touches. The Nigerian performer could prove to be a useful signing for the Reds considering he arrived on a free transfer.

Elanga was handed his first start since arriving at Forest. He’s been busy working on his fitness and Forest will have a serious asset on their hands if he can be match sharp for the start of the campaign.

As for Gibbs-White, it was no surprise to see him sparkle once again. Thank god Forest do have the forward in their ranks, otherwise, they really would be in a spot of bother heading into the new season.

It was a drab night, to say the least for Forest. Two penalties in the first half set the tone defensively and the sooner Felipe and Willy Boly are fit, the better the Reds will look defensively.

Forest have to wrap Gibbs-White in cotton wool. Without a recognised striker fit and available, the Reds will be hoping that the England under-21 star can score more goals this season.

As for Aina, he’s doing his chances of starting against Arsenal no harm at all. He looks composed in possession, whilst he doesn’t look afraid to get stuck into challenges.

Forest are desperate for a lift from somewhere. They now have just one more friendly before the big kick-off and it’s fair to say that some fans are growing increasingly concerned.
