Nottingham Forest could be about to be offered the chance to re-sign Djed Spence from Tottenham. The defender signed for the North Londoners last summer from Middlesbrough but the move has proved a bad one.

Now, according to The Telegraph, Tottenham are willing to propose some players as bait to land Brennan Johnson from Forest. The trio to be offered will be Spence, Joe Rodon and Bryan Gil.

Johnson is a wanted man this summer. Brentford have had at least two offers for the player rejected by Forest, with the club thought to value him at around £50 million.

The Reds will be desperate to keep Johnson beyond the summer transfer window. Tottenham will have significant clout though and Ange Postecoglou is keen to get a deal over the line.

Spence is clearly the name that will ring the most bells with Forest when the proposal is made. He played 46 times for the Reds during the 2021/22 campaign when the Reds were promoted.

The big conundrum, however, is that Forest don’t really need a right-back. Neco Williams and Serge Aurier are already in place, with new signing Ola Aina also capable of playing in that position.

Ian Wright praised Spence during his campaign at Forest. He called him ‘unbelievable’ after the Reds knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup when he was at the club.

Forest could be offered golden chance to sign Spence

Basically, this is Spurs offering Forest the chance to sign one of three players which they don’t want, in return for arguably the club’s most important player.

It doesn’t make a lot of sense from a Forest point of view, it has to be said. The Reds should be trying to do whatever it takes to keep Johnson ahead of another important season.

If the club really does have to sell, however, one of these three might not be too bad. Spence and Rodon would be the most eye-catching pair, with Cooper knowing both players very well.

It will be interesting to see what happens between now and the end of the transfer window. However, it does seem as though Johnson will start the campaign as a Forest player with the season due to start on Saturday.
