Nottingham Forest waved goodbye to Cafu in the summer and on Saturday, he suffered heartbreak on his debut for Rotherham United.

The Reds had the midfielder on their books for a number of years. He arrived from Olympiacos in 2020 as part of the deal that saw Tiago Silva go to Greece.

Cafu always gave his all whenever he pulled a Forest shirt on. He made 55 appearances for the Reds, scoring once in a 4-1 win over Swansea back in 2021.

The Portuguese performer also registered five assists during his time at the club. Last season proved tough for him though and he wasn’t included in the 25-man squad.

Still, Cafu was a very impressive character. He never moaned or sulked about not finding another club and Forest wished him well when they released him in the summer.

It was perhaps surprising when Rotherham picked him up. They got themselves a decent free transfer and he’s impressed in pre-season.

On Saturday, he was powerless in preventing the Millers from a defeat at Stoke City. To compound a drab afternoon, Cafu was sent off during the second 45.

The player picked up a second yellow card. In truth, it was a pretty soft decision by the referee but nonetheless, he will now serve a ban.

This proved a real shame. Okay, the result might not have changed but Rotherham did grow into the game during the second half.

Cafu had made a very decent start to his Rotherham career. He showed some nice touches in the first half and it’s a shame he will have to miss a game.

Forest fans will watch Cafu with intrigue this season. During the club’s time in the Championship, he was perhaps underused and it will be interesting to see how he does with regular games.

Rotherham will have it all to do in order to stave off relegation this season. As a result, departed Forest man Cafu could prove extremely useful in the middle of the park.
