Tottenham offered Nottingham Forest the chance to sign Eric Dier during the negotiations for Brennan Johnson. The 22-year-old is set to sign for Spurs before tonight’s transfer deadline.

The Reds were keen to get the very best deal for Johnson and talks between Daniel Levy and Evangelos Marinakis saw them agree on £47.5 million. The Athletic claims that Tottenham wanted Forest to take Dier and a lesser transfer fee.

The Reds stood firm though. Dier wasn’t a player that Forest wanted to sign and ultimately the club decided to hold tight and get themselves a better cash deal for Johnson.

Dier has previously been praised by Jermaine Jenas. The man who came through Forest’s academy as a player called him ‘sensational’ back in November 2020.

The versatile performer was all set to leave Tottenham this summer. However, with Forest not keen and Bournemouth turning down a deal the player is now set to stay put in Ange Postecoglou’s squad.

Dier has been with Tottenham since 2014 and has just a year to run on his existing deal. He’s played 361 times for Spurs and has also collected 49 caps for his country.

Forest were offered Dier in Johnson deal

The Reds were right not to take the bait on this one. On one hand, Dier is an experienced performer but he’s not really the sort of signing Forest should be making if they want to progress.

At 29-years-old Dier does have some time on his side. However, there are far too many errors in his game to make him a signing that could prove exciting to the Forest fan base.

Thankfully, Forest agreed a deal with Tottenham to cash in on Johnson this summer. It seems as though that deal will allow the Reds to get Ibrahim Sangare over the line in the next few hours.
