Nottingham Forest star Anthony Elanga was praised by Paul Merson who compared the player with Thierry Henry! The Reds player was on hand to fire home for Forest as they won 1-0 away at Chelsea yesterday.

The 21-year-old was signed by Forest during the summer for £15 million from Manchester United. He is yet to start a Premier League game for the Reds but his goal yesterday will have given Steve Cooper food for thought.

Elanga was on the bench again at Stamford Bridge. An injury to Danilo just before half-time, however, saw him get the nod and he grasped the opportunity with both hands.

Merson was watching the game for Soccer Saturday yesterday. He loved the performance from Elanga and after his goal, he praised the Forest forward for his efforts.

The pundit said live on air: “Good goal. It falls to Awoniyi and he needs to pick the pass. He nutmegs the ball through Silva’s legs into Elanga.

“He’s one-on-one with the keeper, he opens his body Thierry Henry-style and just passes it into the far corner. It’s his first goal in 44 appearances, you’d think he’d scored 10 in the last 10.

“It’s an unbelievable finish. Quality pass by Awoniyi and Chelsea now have it all to do.”

Merson raves about Elanga after Forest beat Chelsea

This was Elanga’s best performance in his short Forest career. The goal was just the tip of the iceberg and his pace is going to seriously catch plenty of teams out this season.

At such a young age, he should continue to improve too. At £15 million, he might just prove to be Forest’s best signing of the summer in terms of value for money.

Elanga always gives his all and when he sticks the burners on he often leaves defenders in his wake. There is more to come from the talented forward and his goal yesterday was just reward for his efforts in the opening few games.
