The Nigerian media has delivered an intriguing verdict on Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi. The striker maintained his red-hot form by scoring during a 6-0 victory over Sao Tome and Principe.

Awoniyi has been a man on a real mission. He finished last season with eight goals from six appearances and he’s already found the net three times during the current campaign.

The 26-year-old is starting to showcase what he’s all about after a somewhat slow start to life in England. Awoniyi cost Forest around £17 million when he signed from Union Berlin ahead of last season.

Forest struggled badly at the start of 2022/23. As a result, some critique was thrown in the direction of Awoniyi but he soon silenced those and finished the campaign with 11 goals in all competitions.

Yesterday, he was on the mark for the international team as they secured a comprehensive win. After the game, he was given a 7/10 rating by Own Goal Nigeria.

They said of his performance: “Finished off his goal really well. Showed good strength on the ball. However, his partnership with Osimhen didn’t quite work even though they both got on the score sheet.”

Forest star Awoniyi scores for Nigeria but Osimhen partnership needs some work

It’s very interesting that it’s been claimed that Awoniyi and Osimhen didn’t really work that well together. Both players are in red-hot form at the moment and perhaps they just need time to gel a bit more.

It’s perhaps even stranger that the national media have made this claim. Awoniyi only scored once yesterday but the Napoli talisman scored a hat-trick during the contest.

Nigeria head coach Jose Peseiro won’t want to leave any of the in-form strikers out of his team at the moment. As a result, Awoniyi and Osimhen will likely get plenty more chances to perfect their partnership.
