Nottingham Forest never saw the best of Diogo Goncalves but right now he’s in fine form for FC Copenhagen. He scored in the Champions League last night and has begun the season well.
The Reds took Goncalves on loan for the 2018/19 campaign. When he arrived at the City Ground he was still very raw and between Aitor Karanka and Martin O’Neill he made just 10 appearances.

Goncalves never made a goal contribution at Forest. He was constantly facing a losing battle to impress the two managers, with more experienced options often preferred instead.
After 98 appearances for Benfica, he was allowed to leave the club during the January transfer window. Last night, he scored his first Champions League goal for FC Copenhagen as they drew 2-2 with Galatasaray.
His goal last night sees a strong start to the 2023/24 campaign continue. He’s now scored six goals in 14 appearances for the Danish outfit and he looks in good shape.
Goncalves has actually been playing as a central midfielder of late. He was viewed as a winger at both Forest and Benfica but these days his role appears to have been tweaked.
Goncalves starting to shine after Forest disappointment
Heading to a new country and getting to sample the Championship might have helped the player become a more rounded individual. He won’t have been happy to spend all season in England and play just 10 times, however.

The challenge for Goncalves was always going to be to settle somewhere and get plenty of game time. Now, Copenhagen have given him that opportunity and he’s grasping it with both hands.
At 26-years-old, Goncalves has plenty of time on his side. He will now hope to continue playing well for the Danish outfit and help them progress to the knockout rounds of the Champions League.
