The honest Nottingham Forest verdict on Billy Davies as he targets dream Rangers deal

Rangers are searching for a new manager and former Nottingham Forest boss Billy Davies is now interested in landing the Ibrox job. It would be quite something for the Glasgow giants to take a chance on a manager who hasn’t worked for many years.

The Scottish boss is keen on a return to work. Now, the Daily Record believe that Davies has informed Rangers of his desire to take the top job at Ibrox given that they have a vacancy.

The manager hasn’t worked since 2014 when he left Forest. He left amid criticism on the back of an embarrassing 5-0 defeat to fierce rivals Derby County.

Davies wants Rangers job after Forest exit

This would be absolutely mental. It’s surely impossible to imagine Rangers taking a chance on Davies at this stage. They’re already way off the pace in the race to challenge Celtic for the title and this would be a risk.

Still, Davies was never short of confidence at all. He will back himself to still do a job and even at a club like Rangers. Now, it will be interesting to see whether they will even consider his application.

Rangers need a quick fix – if any such thing exists. They’ve gone backwards this season and they need a manager to come in and resurrect the club after the Michael Beala debacle.

What could Davies bring to Rangers?

Well, the football that Davies got his Forest teams playing was largely good. During his first two-and-a-half years in charge, the team were unstoppable at times.

He oversaw some very memorable performances. His team defeated Leicester 5-1, Derby 5-2 and also went on several unbeaten stretches under his stewardship.

Davies finished both spells at Forest with a win ratio of just over 42%. Indeed, that isn’t bad and in total, he won 78 of the 185 matches that he managed the club.

There are two fundamental problems for Rangers to consider, however. The first is that it’s almost 10 years since Davies managed anyone and it remains to be seen how in touch he is with the modern game.

The second is that Davies might bring a bit of baggage with him to Ibrox if Rangers appoint him. He was never short of something to say at Forest and he wasn’t always the most popular figure with the media, particularly during his second spell.

It’s hard to fathom Rangers making the decision to appoint Davies. It’d be universally unpopular with the fan base and his wait for a return to management might have to go on.
